Here at Bike Club, we scour the world looking for the very best bikes for our members. Ever wondered what makes them so special? Read on to learn about the six main brands we offer:
Forme is our main bike supplier for some very good reasons: Forme’s bikes are designed specifically for children from the ground up; and all its bikes are tested at local Derbyshire cycling clubs, where the feedback from young riders is directly used to hone and perfect its products. There really couldn’t be any better way to make sure Forme’s bikes hit the mark.
But Forme doesn’t just focus on quality and ability, with a huge range of hybrids, road, mountain and balance bikes – all available in a huge range of colours – Forme has something to suit the tastes of any junior rider..
Although Frog was started by husband and wife Jerry and Shelley Lawson, this is anything but a ‘mom and pop’ operation and Frog now operates its own factory in Pontypool, Wales. The idea behind the Frog brand was simple: Jerry and Shelley wanted to enable independent bike shops to stock really, really good lightweight children’s bikes, making it easier for families who didn’t have specialist cycling knowledge to access them.
The Frog range now runs from balance bikes all the way up to serious mountain bikes for young teenagers. And in terms of endorsements, it doesn’t get better than this: Prince Louis rode a Frog on his first day at nursery!.
When it comes to bike manufacturers being synonymous with just one particular type of bike design, there are only a couple brands we can think of. Brompton folding bikes is one, but the other is Strider and its awesome line-up of funky coloured balance bikes.
Strider takes design simplicity to new levels with no-tool assembly, moulded wheels, puncture-free foam tyres and built-in footrests. That all makes learning to cycle super easy for infants, toddlers and – with its amazing rocking base – even children who can’t yet walk will enjoy time spent in the saddle..
Set in Britain’s historic two and four-wheel manufacturing heartlands – the East Midlands – the Squish brand was created by a small team of experienced bike industry professionals who realised the bikes they had learnt on as children simply weren’t good enough.
The Squish range incorporates leisure-friendly hybrid bikes for all ages of young rider, starting with balance bikes and incorporating useful extra features, such as the family-friendly enclosed chaincase on Squish’s small first pedal bike range, meaning both young and old hands and legs should stay oil-free!.
Islabikes might not have invented the children’s bike, but it is probably the brand most responsible for the taking children’s bikes into the modern era, where weight and size-specific parts are placed at a premium.
Based in Ludlow in Shropshire, and founded by cycling legend Isla Rowntree, Islabikes has a full range of children’s bikes, from balance bikes and first pedallers, right up to competition-ready road and mountain bikes. Islabikes has even branched out into bikes for grown-ups too, including some fab electric bikes..
For something just a little different and uber-modern, we have sourced some fantastic little bikes from Woom. These great children’s pedal bikes are designed in Austria and built to be ultralight with a full selection of age-specific components.
That’s not where the attention to detail stops, though: with extras like enclosed chaincases on first pedal bikes, custom-made wheels, and undersized rear triangles on their lightweight aluminium frames – just like on mummy and daddy’s bikes – these are small bikes made seriously.
